Astaxanthin is an antioxidant that has a reddish pigment that belongs to a group of chemicals called carotenoids. It occurs naturally in certain algae and causes the pink or red color in salmon, trout, lobster, shrimp, and other seafood.

Astaxanthin may be used for treating certain cognitive issues such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and “brain attack” from stroke. Also Astaxanthin can support the body that has high cholesterol or eye conditions like macular degeneration (AMD) and may also improve the way the immune system functions.

Astaxanthin as a topical treatment can also be applied directly to the skin for protection against sunburn.

A natural source of Astaxanthin is also found in krill oil.
